Editing Techniques - Three

3) 180 degree rule

This is a technique that establishes the position of the characters which is done by creating an imaginary line through the center of the two subjects. The camera should stay on one side of the line throughout, however, the rule can be deliberately broken to emphasise change in the plot, for example, in 'The Shining'.
